Barcode Scanner

This page contains helpful configuration and usage tips for Android Barocode Scanner app from ZXing.

Configuration Tips

The Barcode Scanner app has it's own Settings screen.

To get to the Settings, open the Barcode Scanner app from the main Android application list. Then press the hardware Menu key and choose Settings.

Settings that might improve performance:

  • In the “decode” section, make sure that only 1D barcodes are selected. This reduces the list of barcodes the app is searching for.
  • In the “general settings” section, make sure that “use front light” is “off”. The front light can make it harder to read barcodes.
  • In the “general settings:” section, make sure “use auto focus” is checked.

Scanning Technique

The best way to scan a VIN barcode in a doorjamb:

  1. Make sure the entire barcode is within the “clear” inner box of the Barcode Scanner main screen. If the barcode overflows into the “greyed” outer area of the box, it will not scan.
  2. Make sure the barcode is centered on the red “laser” line within the “clear” inner box. If the barcode is above the line, below the line, or crooked on the line, it might not scan.
  3. While ensuring that both of the previous conditions are continuously met, SLOWLY move the mobile device closer then farther from the barcode in repeating fashion. The total range of motions is only about 6 inches. So, first move the device 3 inches closer to the barcode, then 3 inches back to neutral, then 3 inches further back, then 3 inches forward to neutral. Repeat until the scan occurs.
